Calling all Superheroes from class 1!

This term we have been exploring our Heroes and Villains topic. The Hedgehogs have designed, named, given powers to and made their own superheroes. We then used a green screen for the first time to make mini film clips for their heroes. Enjoy!

Emergency School Closure- 19th January 2023

Hello Year 1!

As Jack Frost has been out this morning and turned our school into an ice rink, unfortunately our school has had to close to keep you all safe.

Instead, here are a few activities and ideas you can complete at home (pick from the list what you’d like to do!):

Literacy:

· Look out of your window or go outside, what can you see, smell, hear and feel? Write some sentences about the snow/ice, with capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

· Practice your sounds, tricky words and reading book.

· Practice writing sounds to help with formation- you could write them in the snow!

Maths:

· Practice writing your numbers ensuring all formation is correct (can you go all the way to 100?)

· We have been practicing addition and subtraction within 20 (how many sums can you complete?)- see attachments.

· Go outside!- what shapes can you find around you in real life? · Access BBC Supermovers Maths Videos to get moving!- KS1 Maths Collection - BBC Teach

Other:

· Design a snowman.

· Draw a snowy scene.

· Go on a snow scavenger hunt, what can you find?

· Access Online Learning Games via Google: maths - Topmarks Searchphonics - Topmarks Search

Stay safe,

Miss Jones

Week 5 in Hedgehogs

This week in Hedgehogs we’ve been focusing on our families and exploring who is special to us and why. We even learnt how to say our family members in Welsh!

In PE we were very active and completed a series of circuits. We stopped at each one and checked our heart beats to see how exercise affects us. We then headed out to our very wet forest school to work as a team and take part in an Autumn themed scavenger hunt.

We’ve had lots of fun accessing learning through play in our areas too. We enjoyed our new role play shop, writing about our friendship value, practicing our formation and being challenged with Numicon!

Our first few weeks in class 1…

As part of this term’s topic, ‘This is Me’ we have already had fun exploring all aspects our ourselves in Hedgehogs!

Languages Literacy and Communication:

So far we’ve spent lots of time practicing our phonics and tricky words. We’re spending lots of time perfecting our letter formation too.

We received an exciting letter from Riley who is the main character in the film Inside Out (she also brought us yummy popcorn and let us use her Disney+ to watch her film). We’ve been exploring our feelings using the characters to help us and looking at features of a good letter. Some of us are becoming masters at using full stops are capital letters!

Maths:

Over the last 4 weeks we’ve been learning how to count, recognise and write numbers to Atleast 20 (both forwards and backwards). We have been creating number bonds to 10 using our helpful friends, Numicon.

Topic:

So far, through our topic we’ve explored our physical appearance, feelings, our likes and dislikes and our bodies. Our trip to Techniquest this week was also super fun and meaningful to our learning.

Watch Us Grow in Year 1!

We’ve had a wonderful first few weeks in Dosbarth Hedgehogs, look at us on our very first day! We can’t wait to see how much they grow and flourish this year.

Welcome to Dosbarth Hedgehogs!

Here is a quick video to introduce ourselves as your children’s teacher’s this year.

Croeso i ddosbarth Hedgehogs Blwyddyn 1!

Welcome to Hedgehogs Class year 1!

We are very much looking forward to an exciting, happy and successful year ahead!

Below is some information about our class that you might find really useful for your child’s new class.

  • PE and Forest School Day – every Wednesday.

Please send the children to school dressed ready in appropriate clothing (tracksuit, t-shirt, jumper) and suitable footwear (trainers) for both.

  • Uniform is very important.

Please send your child to school in the appropriate uniform – red cardigan/jumper, white polo t-shirt, black shoes or trainers. We understand the need to keep costs down, so uniform can be purchased from supermarkets such as Tesco or Asda and does not need to have the school logo.

  • School timings have changed.

Children must be in school just before 9am, so they are ready to start their day at 9am promptly. The school day ends at 3:05pm.

  • School snack has returned.

If you would like your child to be provided with a piece of fruit in school, then please send in £1 each week in a labelled envelope. This is optional. Your child can bring in their own fruit if they would rather.

  • Water bottles.

Please make sure your child brings in a water bottle daily. I must emphasise that it has to be water and not squash or any other drink.

  • Labelled items.

Please make sure your child’s clothing is clearly labelled with their name, as well as their bottles and snack/ snack pots. We really don’t want any of your child’s belongings to go missing!

  • Reading at home- your child will be allocated a reading day.

On this day their book must be brought into school, they will read with a teacher and the book will be changed for home practice. It is vital you return your books from home as they are expensive to replace in school. Your child may also bring home words to practice to match certain books. A note in your child’s reading record will also help us to see their progress. Your child can also practice at home via the Oxford Reading Buddy online (same log-ins as last year!)

  • Homework – Monday to Monday

Every Monday you child will bring home homework. One week it will be Literacy (spellings, handwriting, phonics etc…) other weeks it will be Maths. These both must be returned the following Monday so new homework can be sent home.

  • Point of contact-

Class Dojo will be the most sufficient and quickest way to contact me with any questions and queries. Class Dojo will also be used for vital updates for our class, so please keep an eye our page using the App.

  • Toys-

We ask if the children please leave their cuddly toys etc at home where they are safe. Unfortunately, we cannot have 28 toys from home in class where they may get misplaced or damaged.
