Curriculum

Blaengwawr's Curriculum

As a school in Wales we follow the Curriculum for Wales which has 6 Areas of Learning Experience (AOLEs).

  • Language, Literacy and Communication
  • Mathematics and Numeracy
  • Health and Well-being
  • Humanities
  • Science and Technology
  • Expressive Arts

Each AOLE has What Matter Statements which show us what concepts, skills and knowledge the children need to learn as they progress through their education from 3 to 16 years of age.

In Blaengwawr each half term our topic themes are led by a focus AOLE, for example this year in Spring 2025 in our Nature's Fury topic this is driven by Humanities skills and knowledge. The staff collaborate together to plan engaging, progressive and skills led experiences for our children.

Blaengwawr Curriculum Policy

Working with #teamblaengwawr families

Through the year we offer parents the opportunity to come in and celebrate their pupils' achievements and academic progress. At Blaengwawr we want to share our curriculum journey with the community.

We also provide workshops for parents to understand the methods and strategies we use to teach children as these will no doubt have changed since they attended school themselves.

During 2024-25 we are focusing on delivering phonic & reading workshops (autumn term) and then some reading cafe opportunities to come in and do activities and see this teaching in action (spring term). We will also be delivering maths workshops for parents (spring term).

We want to have our parents views and to find out what we can provide that will best help them to support their children at home. If you are a parent in our school please do feel free to complete this survey:
